Biofuel
Biofuel uses energy from organic matter. This is either from specific energy crops (e.g. rapeseed to produce Bio-diesel) or from recycled products (e.g. Biodiesel produced from recycled cooking oil).
One of the simplest forms of using biofuel is growing trees to provide heating and hot water. Provided the wood comes from a sustainable forest, this fuel is completely renewable and produces very little net Carbon Dioxide emmision. Although burning wood does emit Carbon Dioxide, it only emits the amount that was absorbed when the trees grew. The equipment required to use this fantastic renewable energy range from a simple wood burner to wood burners with back boilers and even wood boilers that work in the same way as your central heating boiler. These are ideal when combined with solar thermal systems as you get most solar energy available during the months when heating (and therefore the wood burner/boiler) is not required.
There are 2 main fuels used for home heating:
Logs: The simplest and least processed. The best wood burners now have efficiencies over 70% and back boilers can be attached to heat the whole house and produce winter hot water. Dedicated wood boilers use fans and advanced gasification techniques to achieve over 90% efficiency.
Wood Pellets: These are small pellets made from recycled saw mill waste. They can store more energy in a given space than the other two fuels and are the easiest to automate. Efficiency can be over 90%
We have developed integrated systems that bring together solar, wood fuel (and backup fossil fuel energy if required) in a way that allows the renewable fuels to make the maximum contribution towards both heating and hot water. Every property is unique and will have a different system design but this schematic shows one such system
We can design a system to work with any stove that has a back boiler. If you are interested in installing a new wood burner or stove, we recommend Wendron Stoves and have worked with them on many occasions.
We provide a free, no-obligation design and estimation service. To see if your property is suitable for using biofuel, call us on 01736 740955 or email on trenowin@btconnect.com to arrange an appointment.
